About

Luís Oliveira is a Brazilian cinematographer interested in the construction of the cinematic image through the relationship between light, materiality, and technical apparatus. His work is guided by an ongoing investigation of the ways in which light, optical devices, and photographic processes participate in the visual construction of cinema.

Holding a degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), he began his career through independent research on photochemical and optical processes. During this period, he explored anthropology, documentary filmmaking, festival production, and critical writing about cinema. This experiences, contributed to the development of an attentive eye to the cultural, historical, and material dimensions of the image.

Simultaneously, he dedicated himself to stage lighting, deepening his understanding of light sources and the processes of shaping light in space—an investigation that would become central to his practice as a cinematographer.

Later, he graduated in cinematography for film from the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) in Cuba, an experience that consolidated his work in the context of Latin American cinema.

Today he works as a cinematographer and gaffer on film projects. In addition to his on-set experience, he conducts research on cinematographic and photographic equipment, investigating camera mechanisms, capture formats, and optical systems. This technical dimension directly informs his visual approach, which seeks to articulate technical rigor, luminous sensitivity, and narrative construction.

His work is guided by the creation of images that engage with the tradition of Latin American cinema while exploring the expressive potential of photographic processes and light.
